Week #6 continued

Hi All

Well i think library thing is one of my favourite sites so far. It is easy to use, really easy to add books to your own catalogue- what a great idea. I like the way that Kingston library is using library thing, i think it would be great if we could do something simliar. Technorati would be useful if you wanted more people to read your blog and i guess it would encourage you to tag your blog more (somthing i keep forgetting to do).

Hopefully the licence 2 test drive information will stay up for awhle so that i can go back and refresh my memory about some of the sites that we have looked at over the last few weeks. As unless you take the time and effort to immerse yourself in the web 2.0 world it is easy to forget that all this wonderful stuff is out there. That's why we need to start integrating it into our everyday work lives.

Week #6 delicious

Delicious looks like a great site to share websites in an organised manner (just how we Librarians like it). A one stop location great for reference links as we have seen with Gavin from Noosa library putting up their ref desk links for everyone. It's also fantastic that you can be updated on new links on similiar topics.

I will have to explore further on other subjects before i can comment some more.

Week #5 rss feeds

This week i've quickly been looking at RSS feeds week 5. I added the following feeds: librarian.net, resourceshelf, the shifted librarian, slq license 2 test drive. Its always good to see what other people are up to in an area that interests you, without it clogging up your inbox. Some of the feeds i looked at seem to be from patrons and the information wasn't reall useful.

It gave me an insight into what some of our patrons are using and it this knowledge will hopefully make it easier for me to answer their questions. In my secondment position i will needs a much more in depth look at rss feeds to truly understand all their benefits. So i'm glad i've started and i can keep going back to bloglines to keep current with what is happening. It's also a good place to view others ideas to see what has worked in terms of public programs in web 2.0 etc.

Perhaps in the workplace it would be beneficial to have different staff members with different feeds relevant to our tasks but still useful to others and then we could share some of the information via e-mail or at staff meetings.

It seems that it might take a while to set up the feeds in all your subject areas but once set up the information just comes straight to you saving you the ongoing searching.

test drive 3: wikis

Yay finally got a chance to look at week 3. I looked at three of the different wikis and here are my comments:

Wisconsin heritage wiki- this was an example of a wiki that you had to pay for before you could look at the information or add information. I didn't realise there was wikis that limited there access in this way.

Book lovers wiki= looks like it was a great project while it was running but is no longer being added too. It would be a good way to get our book clubs and community involved in adding comments (that we could use in our great reads). However i think the way they went with adding review to the catalogue is probably the better way to go as it is more visible and you would probably get more feedback this way.

Wookieepedia- star wars wiki- sorry i'm not a follower so it didn't make much sense to me but it would be great for people that shared this passion for star wars. as they could accesst this information at anytime and say what the latest goss was. I noticed that it had detailed information about upcoming games that are to be released later this year.

I though the idea of having a wiki containing our heritage photos and information that people could their own comments and memories to would be a great community project and would bolster the local history information that we have.

that's all for now

talk again soon

first blog

Hi Everyone

I have taken the first step and created my blog. I've only created one other blog before in training some years ago (which i have never revisted). So i am hoping to learn enough about blogs so that i feel confident in helping other staff and clients with their blogging questions. I think the concept of lifelong learning is fantastic and it is wonderful that state library is supporting it with free programs and learning options.

Working in a library and being a mother to a toddler i find myelf a bit time poor at the moment so i have never really looked at anyone else's blogs. A few years ago i did read a few parenting forums but i didn't contribute to any of them myself.

Perhaps one way that blogs can be used in our library branch would be to have it available on the check in room computer for staff to view everyday and we could use it with our recent communication (which we currently write down or convey verbally).

Perhaps we could have a blog in which we talk about our regular monthly talks, where we can answer clients questions and perhaps have the authors themselves log on occasionally to have a chat.

Well that's all I have time for today
Have a good one
Amanda
